I have been tweaking this Web site for a year trying to speed up page loading times. Depending on the time of day, it takes up to 40 seconds just to load the front page. I thought it was my fault.
I thought the themes I was using in WordPress were just too large. I thought I was using too many plugins. The main reason I originally looked into transfering my photos to Flickr instead of hosting them all in this site was because the site was just really bogged down.
It would take 10 seconds on a good day to load each new page. At times the site was unreadable.
After re-installing a fresh copy of WordPress and switching down to the simpler default theme yesterday, the site didn’t run any faster. So I started to believe that the fault was in my Web host, Network Solutions.
Turns out I was right.

Apparently, some users of Internet Explorer were having trouble viewing this Web site lately. The header and side columns would show, but the middle column — you know, the one with all the posts — was missing and jumbled at the bottom of the page.
So I switched to the default WordPress theme while I find a new look.
I think software updates knocked the old theme out of usability. I also noticed that the theme switch has cured a problem I had with my blog and Flickr communicating with each other.
So pardon my blog’s mess while I update the theme and explore Flickrizing my gallery.
Happy early birthday to the blog, which turns 1 on Saturday, Feb. 9, the date I wrote my first blog entry.
The blog underwent a lot of changes in the last year, at one point even switching software platforms entirely to Movable Type before it was moved back to Wordpress. But I’m happy where it is today.
Just this week I launched a podcast, on which I’m still trying to work out the kinks.
Let’s face it, it’s just a hobby of mine. And if I happen to entertain those who check out the site, then that’s just a bonus.
Thanks for reading.

The Ultimate Warrior recently discussed the death of Heath Ledger on his blog, Warrior’s Machete. The Warrior opines that Ledger’s death is less important than the deaths of U.S. soldiers in Iraq, which is a just statement when comparing media attention each receives.

I know my blog’s physical appearance is changing more than Linda Wachowski, but I think this time it’s for good.
I hope you like the new look. I’ve changed blog publishing software back to WordPress from Movable Type and have found a new layout I like better than the last two.
Movable Type ended up being too much of a headache. The software interface, though I initially liked it a lot, never quite worked as it should. The innards of the software — that which readers never see — was very slow to respond. And the software’s “dashboard” display never ran as designed. I’m confident it was a problem with the permission settings of the software’s folders on the servers, but that wasn’t the only problem.

No, you’ve come to the right place. The blog is undergoing a lot of changes.
Aside from the very obvious design change, the majority of changes are under the hood — things readers won’t see, but are large improvements for me, the blog writer.
Problems I was experiencing with Internet Explorer not being able to see embedded videos from YouTube or Google Video prompted me to look into new turnkey blog software.
On my home computer, which runs Vista and the latest versions of Internet Explorer 7 and Norton Internet Security, the embedded blog videos were not displaying properly when I viewed the blog in Internet Explorer.
