Woman in iron lung dies when house loses power

APC Battery BackupA woman, 61, confined to an iron lung died May 28 when her family’s house lost power reports the AP.

The woman had been stricken to the large metal tube since she was diagnosed with polio when she was 3 years old.

Because of the polio’s damage to her spine, she was unable to upgrade to a more modern form of breathing assistance when they became available in the 1950s.

The power company said the outages were spotty due to a tree branch that had fallen on power lines. The family said they were unable to get the emergency generator working. How sad.
