Throw me a freakin’ bone

Finding a reliable dogsitter has become a problem. We haven’t needed one as of yet, but after booking our trip to Chicago in December, the hunt is on.

I didn’t think it would be this big of a problem, but there are certain factors you just don’t forsee. Like your uncle’s dog biting your pup in the face!

It happened a few weeks ago. Fitz was 100% fine, his eye was a little red like it was poked, but no worries. Tiff and I always dogsit for my aunt and uncle. Their dog Lady was one of the most laid back and quiet dogs we know — or so we thought.

We introduced the two and Fitz got super excited and started jumping on Lady, to which lady responded by walking away and growling. Then she bit him. Later on in the day, with Fitz on a leash, I let Lady approach him from behind for a few sniffs, hoping she would calm down. But afterwards, I let Fitz slowly approach her and Lady came after him. She immediately lunged with her mouth open and I had to yank Fitz back.

So my uncle’s house isn’t an option.

No problem, I have two grandmas in Cincy that love dogs! Driving down to Cincy will be a bit of a pain, but we won’t need a dogsitter all that often. No worries, right?

Well, what about grandma J’s pool? It’s covered and if the dog falls in, or jumps in willingly, he could drown. My grandma J has hip problems and doesn’t move much. So it’s a risk.

What about my grandma M? No pool, but no fenced in backyard either. That means she’ll have to put him on a leash to take him outside every time he wants to use the bathroom.

Both grandmas are close to 80 and a 4 1/2 month-old dog is gonna be a lot to handle for them.

Tiff’s mom would be an option but she has a large pit bull named Jackie Brown. I’m not kidding. The thing would probably bite Fitz in half.

The K9 Social Club comes highly reccomended from a few coworkers, but leaving a dog in a kennel for three days is always a plan Z. Socializing Fitz with other dogs is important, however, so we’re seriously considering putting him in doggy daycare a couple days a week while we’re at work.

Right now, the plan is to drive to Cincy and drop Fitz off with Grandma M., continuing on to Chicago from there. The detour will only add on hour to our drive.

  4. My wife and I are looking for another dog. She has a cockapoo (half poodle, half cocker spaniel) and insists that any new dog be a non- or light-shedder, too. Terriers qualify, and after several months of disagreeing over the prospect of canine number two, we finally agree on the terrier family. My problem is that cockapoos are so very feminine, and I want a butch dog to compensate. Your dog gives me hope!

  5. Good luck with that Richard. Fitz definitely doesn’t shed much. And Bostons came in at no. 11 on this list of the top 13 manly dogs.
