MediaMonkey review

After converting all my DRM-locked music from iTunes, I got to play around with MediaMonkey last night. I’m not impressed.

As a pure music manager, I think MediaMonkey is better than iTunes. It give you more options and tweekables that audiophiles will love. But that’s where it ends.

Support for video and games is nonexistent. If you have an MP3 player that plays video and games, there’s no reason in my mind to use MediaMonkey. The program does support some video, but from skimming the site’s forum it appears you have to purchase an addon for $20. And that’s after you’ve already bought the “Gold” edition of MediaMonkey for $20.

So that’s $40 to be able to play video on your iPod plus the hassle of additional configuration. In the world of computer programs, free is still king.

If you have an MP3 player that only plays music, like the iPod Shuffle, than MediaMonkey may be something for you. I tend to think the limited storage capability of the Shuffle would make MediaMonkey overkill however.

If you like playing video and games on you iPod, just stick to iTunes. And download your DRM-free songs from iTunes Plus or Napster. Or Pirate Bay.
