Flock weaves Web browsing, social networking

Flock

If you’re a frequent user of social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter or Digg, or even perhaps just like tinkering around with the latest software technology, there’s a new Web browser you should try.

It’s called Flock. The browser integrates popular sites like Flickr and YouTube as well as Web mail from Google and Yahoo right into the browser. The concept is meant to save you time so you don’t have to visit and log into each individual site to get updates. It tells you if you have new mail or if a friend updated his or her Facebook profile right inside a minimal tool bar. It’ll even show you if your contacts have uploaded any new photos to Flickr and display the latest thumbnails in their photostream.

And even more impressive is that Flock was built using Mozilla, the same engine used for Firefox so a lot of its functionality is the same. The only downside I’ve notice so far is that the default search engine in the top right search bar is Yahoo! and you can’t change it to Google. The only option is to click a drop-down menu, select Google and it will take you to Google’s front page. You can change the default search engine deep inside the options panel.

If you’re a die hard Firefox supporter, there social networking hope for you too. Firefox plans to release similar functions inside a project called “The Coop.” No telling when the functions are going to be fully released, but you can download a prototype addon here. I can’t get the addon to do anything, however. Every time I hit “Log in” nothing happens.
