Charmaine Dragun, a 29-year-old newswoman for Sydney’s Channel 10 in Australia, killed herself Nov. 2 when she jumped off The Gap, an infamous suicide spot in the city.
The “beautiful and bubbly” Dragun had a successful career, a long-term relationship and a loving family according to an article on News.com.au.
She took her life only hours before she was scheduled to read a news bulletin with co-anchor Tim Webster.
Family, friends and colleagues are understandably stunned.
“She was going great, we thought,” said Webster.
Fellow newsreader Deborah Knight said it was “completely unexpected.”
“No one had any idea how sad she must have been,” said Knight. “People are now wondering if we should have taken more interest in what was going on in her life.”
Dragun had received a promotion which relocated her from Perth to Sydney about a year ago. The move took Dragun away from family, friends and relationships she had established in Perth, forcing her to start from scratch in Sydney.
In an interview last year prior to moving to Sydney, Dragon spoke about the relocation.
“I have a real love-hate relationship with Sydney,” she said. “It would be hard to imagine being away from my family and bringing up a family over there, but we’ll have to see what it all brings.”
