C-Bus man busted for towing scam

Danny BirtA Columbus man has been indicted on 27 felony counts of grand-theft auto and extortion for running a towing company scam according to The Columbus Dispatch.

Danny Birt’s On-Demand Towing would send letters to businesses in the Short North and other areas offering to tow away illegally parked vehicles. Then, even without a reply from the business, would start towing. His letters to businesses said no response was necessary.

At some of the businesses, Birt posted no towing sign whatsoever.

It’s guys like this that give towing companies a bad name. Or maybe it’s just towing companies that give themselves a bad name. Every experience I’ve had with them has contained a strong undertone of illegality.

Not to mention the carnage that I’ve witnessed occur once a month on Neil Ave. on street sweeping day. Tow trucks assisted by Columbus cops rip cars off the street like madmen around 8 a.m. It’s just ugly.
