Create ‘Invisible’ Folders On Your Computer

Keeping certain files hidden on your computer can help you not end up publicly humiliated or even dead.

If you don’t want to spend money on software to lock and encrypt your private files like Folder Lock, you can at least do your best to hide them.

Jeff Dempsey suggests creating an invisible folder using the following method in his blog:

  • Create a new folder.
  • Delete the name of the folder. Windows will not accept a blank file name, so to get around it, with the blank folder name still highlighted, hold alt and type 0160 using your number pad (make sure num lock is on).
  • Right click the file, choose Properties, then the Customize tab and click the Change Icon button.
  • Choose one of the blank icons.
  • Put all your porn personal files in the folder.

This method won’t be good enough to hide your files from the prying eyes of the Geek Squad, but should be enough to keep them away from your girlfriend or most other users of your computer.

UPDATE: To delete the file, open a command prompt and change directory into the containing folder (For instance, the desktop folder), and run this command:

ren “Alt+0160” “NewFolderName”

You will need to actually type the Alt+0160 characters where illustrated in the command. It will appear as a space.
