I Treat Myself To An Xbox360 Elite

Xbox 360 eliteNearly two years after the Xbox 360 was launched on Nov. 22, 2005, I finally broke down and purchased one for myself on Friday.

I had been waiting for the dust to settle between the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 war in order to see which system came out on top. Not to mention the surprising success of the Nintendo Wii, which I still haven’t yet played. Knowing that Nintendo games tend to angle themselves a little more towards a younger audience, I knew it would come down to the Xbox or PS3.

Even now, there is no clear-cut winner. I had been feeding my gaming addiction with healthy doses of World of Warcraft and Command & Conquer 3: Tibirium Wars on my PC over the past year. But my itch to get a high-end console was getting too strong to ignore.

PC gaming just doesn’t compete with console gaming anymore.

I decided on the Xbox 360 Elite for three reasons:

1) Price. A fully loaded Xbox 360 Elite was $449. The PS3, which comes with a hard drive only half the size of the Xbox, was $499. The PS3 does come with a built in high definition DVD player but that leads me to reason 2…

2) Blu-Ray vs. HD DVD. The war between high definition DVD formats may be even more intense than the Xbox/PS3 battle. The PS3 comes stock with the ability to play Blu-Ray discs, a format Sony produced. The Xbox has an external HD DVD player available for purchase. Until I purchase a big-screen telly, I won’t need either so I still have time to wait to see which format wins. And with the Xbox, I’ll probably have the option to purchase an external Blu-Ray drive if Blu-Ray indeed comes out on top. But the PS3 is locked in to Blu-Ray since it is an internal drive. None of this may end up mattering, but with the Xbox I’m investing my money into expanded hard drive space instead of a Blu-Ray drive I may never want.

3) And finally, two friends of mine already have Xboxes. And the only thing better than playing Madden 08 is trouncing your friends’ butts at the game online.

My Xbox Live card name is TheSparkus. If you have an Xbox 360 as well, add me as a friend.

I’ll see you online.
